The Oddity of Magnets

Magnetism is one of those rare scientific phenomena that feels like magic even when you understand the physics behind it. While we use magnets every day in everything from credit cards to MRI machines, their fundamental behavior remains deeply strange when viewed through the lens of our everyday experience.



The Invisible Force

The most striking thing about magnets is their ability to exert significant force without any physical contact. Unlike a push or a pull from a hand, a magnetic field operates across a vacuum or through solid objects. This occurs because of the alignment of electrons within a material. In most objects, electrons move in random directions, effectively canceling out each other’s magnetic influence. However, in a permanent magnet, these tiny "atomic magnets" align in the same direction, creating a collective field that reaches out into the space around it.



The Mystery of Poles

Every magnet has a north and a south pole. The oddity here lies in the fact that these poles are inseparable. If you take a piece of wood and cut it in half, you have two smaller pieces of wood. If you take a magnet and cut it in half, you do not get a separate north piece and a south piece. Instead, you instantly create two smaller, complete magnets, each with its own north and south pole. Scientists have searched for a "monopole," which is a particle with only one magnetic charge, but so far, none have been proven to exist in nature.



A Planet Sized Magnet

The strangest magnet of all might be the one we are currently standing on. The Earth behaves like a giant bar magnet because of the movement of molten iron and nickel in its outer core. This geodynamo creates a massive magnetic field that extends far into space, acting as a shield against solar radiation.


What makes this truly peculiar is that Earth’s magnetic poles are not fixed. Geologic records show that the poles actually flip every few hundred thousand years. During these events, north becomes south and south becomes north. This means that a compass from a million years ago would have pointed in the opposite direction than it does today.



Quantum Roots

At its deepest level, magnetism is a result of quantum mechanics. It is tied to a property of electrons called "spin." While it is easy to visualize an electron as a tiny spinning ball of charge, it is actually a point particle with no physical volume. The fact that something with no size can have a physical orientation and create a magnetic field is one of the many ways that magnets defy our common sense intuition about how the world should work.
